Getting Started with SEES Beamline Facilities

Welcome to the Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science (SEES) program! We’re excited to help you take your research to the next level. Whether you’re just starting out with synchrotron techniques or you’re an experienced user, we’re here to guide you and ensure you have everything you need for a successful experience.

Why Use a Synchrotron?

Synchrotrons are powerful X-ray sources, orders of magnitude stronger than typical lab instruments, allowing researchers to study materials in improved and new ways. At SEES, we support a wide range of geoscience research, including geochemistry, mineral and rock physics, environmental science, petrology, paleontology, and more. Our state-of-the-art facilities allow users to uncover new insights into the processes that shape our planet and beyond.

Accessing Our Facilities

  • Free to Use: All our facilities are available with no fee for use. However, please note that users are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses.
  • Proposal System: Beam time is allocated through a proposal system. Our team is here to help you navigate this process.

Getting Support Every Step of the Way

You don’t need to be an expert to start using our facilities. Our beamline scientists are here to assist you by:

  • Providing Training: Offering hands-on training to help you use the facility and instruments effectively.
  • Guiding Your Research: Discussing your research ideas and helping to identify the best techniques for your synchrotron-based project.
  • Assisting with Proposals: Providing advice on crafting a competitive proposal to increase your chances of securing beam time.

Next Steps

  1. Learn About Our Facilities: Explore the different beamlines and capabilities we offer. Each beamline is unique, so understanding their specific features can help you decide where to begin.
  2. Connect with a Beamline Scientist: Reach out to the scientist associated with the beamline you’re interested in. They can help refine your research idea and guide you through the proposal process.
  3. Submit Your Proposal: Once you’re ready, submit your proposal for review. Each facility has its own proposal process for requesting beam time. Follow the links provided on the facilities page to learn about the specific requirements and timelines for each one.
