Registration Deadline: 2025 APS/SEES School on CONUSS/PHOENIX

April 15

2025 APS/SEES

CONUSS/PHOENIX SCHOOL

Argonne National Laboratory
May 12-14, 2025

Nuclear resonant scattering (NRS) methods, including Synchrotron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (SMS) and Nuclear Resonance Inelastic Spectroscopy (NRISX), are practiced at three beamlines at the APS: Sector 3, 16, and 30. Users are offered 5 different isotopes to work with: 57Fe, 83Kr, 119Sn, 151Eu, and 161Dy. The APS-U brought significant enhancements in x-ray beam focusing and bunch purity that benefit high-pressure and microscopy research, which are quite relevant to Earth, planetary science, physics, chemistry, and material science communities. There are, however, challenges in choosing the right modality, acquiring reliable data, and analyzing results. The APS NRS group has adopted two main data evaluation packages since its inception: CONUSS for SMS, both in the energy and time domains, and PHOENIX for NRIXS.

Purpose of the school is to foster a new generation of scientific users by introducing basic concepts and by training students on data interpretation to ultimately demonstrate the scientific reach of nuclear resonant spectroscopy.

The Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, in collaboration with the National Science Foundation’s Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science (SEES), is organizing an in-person three-day school on CONUSS and PHOENIX. The invited speaker, Dr. Wolfgang Sturhahn, author of both programs, will introduce the software and conduct extensive hands-on training on spectra interpretation. The school is a great opportunity for students and early career scientists to become familiar with SMS and NRIXS.

The three-day workshop will be conducted at Argonne National Laboratory. Please note that the Laboratory requires a security check for visitors, which may take weeks, particularly for citizens of countries that are considered sensitive countries under DOE regulations. There is no registration fee. Housing at the Argonne Guest House will be provided for up to four nights, and lunches and dinners will be covered. Participants will be eligible to apply for limited travel support, subject to availability. The workshop will be limited to 20 students.
